GRID COMPUTING

Grid computing is the use of heterogeneous and distributed computing resources as a single computational entity. Advanced networking capability and software has permitted computing elements at different universities and research facilities to be organized as an integrated, scheduable computing resource. The virtual merging of computing resources can lead to several advantages including access to distributed data resources, "on-demand" aggregation of distributed resources, efficient scheduling of resources, and resource sharing (ref: Chetty et.al. , "Weaving Computational Grids: How analogous are they with electrical grids.", Computing in Science & Engineering July/August 2002.)
