GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) describes the computer hardware and software used to collect, manage, display and analyze large amounts of spatially-referenced data. This type of analysis, often when combined with other resources, can be a powerful new method for identifying potential data relationships.

Courses in GIS at Rutgers There are several GIS short courses conducted at Rutgers through the Cook College Office of Continuous and Professional Education. Information on these courses can be found at http://aesop.rutgers.edu/~ocpe/programs/geomatics.html.

GIS Software Available at Rutgers Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) software is site-licensed to Rutgers University. This site license is managed by the Center for Remote Sensing & Spatial Analysis. Information on the packages, pricing and procedures to obtain the software are available at http://crssa.rutgers.edu/esri/ or through the university software portal https://software.rutgers.edu.

GIS Datasets The Rutgers University Libraries have compiled a resource guide for identifying available numeric and GIS databases. Please check out http://www.scc.rutgers.edu/numeric_data/.

If you research group has GIS datasets available to others at the university, please contact oirt@rutgersNOSPAM.edu. We are developing a list data resources available at the university.
